The Battle of Scannagallo re-enactment

The Reenactment of the Battle of Scannagallo (also known in history as the Battle of Marciano) is a significant episode in the 16th-century Tuscan history, a historical-cultural event commemorating the famous battle that took place on August 2, 1554, during the period of wars between the Florentines and the Sienese for control of the Tuscan territory.
The Battle of Scannagallo was a decisive clash that saw the victory of the Florentine troops, commanded by Cosimo I de' Medici, against the Sienese army led by Piero Strozzi. The rivalry between Florence and Siena was fueled by political, economic, and territorial motivations. Both cities aspired to expand their dominion and consolidate their power in the Tuscan region.

The battle took place near the small village of Pozzo della Chiana near the Scannagallo ditch, in the vicinity of Marciano della Chiana, in the province of Arezzo. The castle of Marciano della Chiana, always loyal to Florence, was strategically important as it controlled a fundamental passage for the transport of goods between the two cities.

The re-enactment of this battle is organised annually, at the end of July, by the local Scannagallo Cultural Association of Pozzo della Chiana, which, with the collaboration of numerous Italian historical companies, brings to life the events of the summer of 1554.
The event usually spans three days with activities involving not only the village of Pozzo but also the nearby town of Marciano della Chiana. Numerous participants in period costumes faithfully reconstruct the events and military tactics of the 16th century. Swords, spears, cannons, and perfectly reproduced armors are common sights.

The reenactment is not limited to the reconstruction of military clashes but also includes a series of cultural and recreational activities such as medieval markets, period music and dance shows, demonstrations of ancient crafts, Renaissance gastronomy, falconry shows, flag throwers, and other cultural and folk activities.
The event attracts a diverse audience, including history enthusiasts, tourists, families, and members of the local community.

The Reenactment of the Battle of Scannagallo not only commemorates an important historical event of the region but also contributes to promoting historical awareness to educate the public about local and regional history, to valorize the cultural heritage of Tuscany, and to reflect on the broader context in which it occurred and the political, social, and cultural dynamics of the time. We can assure you that it is a completely fascinating event not to be missed, which will catapult you back to the 16th century for a day.
