Trekking in Casentino valley with an Environmental Guide
A full day of slow-paced walking, designed to savor every detail of the route. Following a scenic circular loop around Monte Penna, we will be led to discover the Fairy Forest, considered the most colorful, diverse, and life-rich area of the entire Casentinesi Forests National Park.
It will be an immersive experience with a deeply Tolkien-esque atmosphere—a true journey out of time—among steep cliffs, centuries-old beech forests, landscapes with an almost fossil-like appearance, mysterious caves, natural cathedrals carved by rock, wide-open views, and above all… ancient legends that still seem to whisper among the trees.
We will set off from Chiusi della Verna to reach the famous Franciscan Sanctuary, following La Beccia, a historic medieval road walked for centuries by pilgrims, travelers, and men of faith. This ancient path has preserved all the charm of the past and accompanies the walk with an atmosphere of reflection and spirituality.
During the hike we will admire Sasso Spicco and the imposing cliff that supports the Sanctuary—natural and symbolic landmarks of great evocative power. We will also discover the Icehouse (Ghiacciaia) and walk through an extraordinary forest that changes its face with every step, among plays of light, ever-changing colors, and surprising biodiversity that makes every section of the trail unique and unforgettable.

La Verna: Peace and Spirituality
Located in the Tuscan Apennines, the Sanctuary of La Verna is deeply connected to the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. It was here, in 1224, that the saint received the stigmata, transforming the site into a pilgrimage destination for believers worldwide.
The Sanctuary
Surrounded by a dense forest of beech and fir trees, the sanctuary stands on a spectacular cliff at an altitude of 1,128 meters. The main structures include the Basilica, the Chapel of the Stigmata, and numerous cloisters and smaller chapels. The tranquillity and solemnity of the place, combined with its simple, Franciscan architecture, invite meditation and prayer.
History and Spirituality
The mountain was gifted to Saint Francis by Count Orlando Cattani, becoming a spiritual refuge for the saint. La Verna is inseparably linked to Francis's life, his choice of poverty, and his communion with nature. The Chapel of the Stigmata, built on the exact spot where Saint Francis received the signs of Christ’s Passion, is one of the most venerated places for pilgrims.
The Surroundings
The landscape surrounding La Verna is equally inspiring. Wooded trails offer opportunities for contemplative walks, immersing visitors in the silence and beauty of nature. The National Park of the Casentino Forests, where La Verna is located, features paths that lead through ancient forests and to fascinating hermitages.
La Verna Today
In addition to being a place of prayer, La Verna is also an important center for Franciscan culture. Spiritual retreats, conferences, and religious celebrations are regularly held here. With its mystical atmosphere and enchanting location, the sanctuary continues to inspire those seeking a moment of reflection and inner peace.
