Città di Castello
Città di Castello is situated on a slight rise of the Alta Valle del Tevere, and there are many factors that contribute to defining the peculiar City: the Renaissance architectural structure, population density, geographic location and the spoken dialect. It was founded by the Umbrians that at the beginning of the 1st millennium BC settled in Central Italy and called it Tiferno. After that in 295 BC Rome subdued the village, it became at the end of the first century a prosperous and rich city, graced with public buildings and temples. It was a free Guelfo’s municipality a testimony of his strength and power are the two splendid palaces of the Priori and Podestà designed by the architect Angelo da Orvieto. Today it remains the Renaissance architecture in conjunction with the Civic Tower pendant, called “Torre del Vescovo”, the Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, so named because the place stood a deposit (or a foundry) cannons, at the Palazzo Vitelli in Sant’Egidio, the Duomo, the characteristic cylindrical bell tower and the Church of San Francesco, the 14th century Church changed internally in the Baroque style.
