Vacations in Greve in Chianti, villas and farmhouses
Since the Middle Ages the history of Greve is linked to its beautiful main square with the characteristic triangular shape and largely surrounded by arcades, which has always exercised the function of "Mercatale" where the routes between the Valdarno and the way from Florence through the charming Chianti hills leading into Siena met. Greve was in the middle of a densely populated area, rich in churches and “pievi” and scattered with feudal castles and villages, that after the conquest and transformation to the Florentines became residences, villas and farms.
It was also at the center of an area prized by the agricultural point of view: there was produced, and still is, a highly regarded and well-known wine, the “Chianti”, worldwide famous. The intermediate position between Florence and Siena, in the period of great cultural, artistic and economic growth of the two main cities of Tuscany, had important consequences for the development of the entire territory of Greve.
The oldest part of the village revolves around the convent of San Francesco and the market square. Other important monuments to visit are the Castello di Verrazzano with its historic wine cellars, the rectory of Santa Croce and the 14th century fresco of the Madonna and Child and the Romanesque Pieve of San Donato a Mugnana.
